CANDARAS, AKEY NAMED HONORARY CO-CHAIRS OF 2005 WORLD’S LARGEST PANCAKE BREAKFAST

Springfield, MA — The Spirit of Springfield announced today that Representative Gale D. Candaras (D-Wilbraham) and Massachusetts Air National Guard Colonel Michael Akey will serve as the Honorary Co-Chairs of the World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast. Representative Candaras was selected for her strong beliefs in the mission of the Spirit of Springfield, and Colonel Akey for the selfless contributions of the Massachusetts National Guard during times of war.
The Spirit of Springfield also announced that the 20th annual “World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast” will include a new look and a new location. After 19 years, the annual event will move from Main Street to the Eastfield Mall parking lot in celebration of Springfield’s 369th birthday. The flapjack feast will be held Saturday, May 14, 2005, from 8AM to 11AM.
“I’m honored and very excited to be part of this first-time Pancake Breakfast at Eastfield Mall,” Candaras said. “All we need is great weather and we’ll have a great time.”
This year’s event, sponsored by Hannoush Jewelers, will feature pancakes from the International House of Pancakes (IHOP), milk and juice from H.P. Hood, coffee compliments of Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, butter courtesy of Cabot Creamery with additional support from Costco, the Western Massachusetts Correctional Alcohol Control Center, Sisters of Providence Health System, Springfield Civic Center, and Kittredge Kitchen Equipment. A team of some 400 volunteers with logistical support provided by the Massachusetts Army National Guard will set out to feed flapjacks to the thousands of people on 1,200 feet of table.
Tickets for the “World’s Largest Pancake Breakfast” are $3 for adults and $1 for children. Free breakfast tickets are being distributed through participating school systems.
