CANDARAS TO SEEK REELECTION TO 12TH HAMPDEN SEAT

SPRINGFIELD, Mass - Incumbent State Representative Gale D. Candaras announced today that she will seek re-election as the representative for the newly-redistricted 12th Hampden District State Representative seat.

“It has been my privilege to serve for the past six years as your state representative and I will be proud to continue the important work I do in Boston and here at home for the people of the 12th Hampden District”, Candaras said.

“During redistricting, I fought hard for this district assignment because I know how important a vital Springfield, especially good schools, hospitals, libraries, and a revitalized downtown are to the welfare of the region. I’ve always known that as Springfield goes so goes western Massachusetts. The real opportunities and challenges are to be found in the ‘City of Homes’ and I want a voice in its future.” Candaras has one of the largest new districts in western Massachusetts.

Candaras is a rising star in the House of Representatives. In just five years on Beacon Hill she has amassed an impressive record of accomplishments. Candaras was the first representative from the Class of 1997 to be elevated to a leadership position when she was appointed this year to serve as Chair of the House Ethics Committee. She continues to serve on the House Judiciary Committee, the Government Regulations Committee, and as vice-chair of the House Committee on Public Service. Candaras is one of a handful of women attorneys to serve in the House.

Candaras has a record of fulfilling her campaign promises. She was the first representative to maintain a local district office in the 12th Hampden District (formerly the 13th Hampden District). She has fought to restore funds to the Hampden County Courts and public schools in her District. She has been a strong voice in Boston for increased funding for local hospitals and libraries. As Vice Chair of the Committee on Public Service, she was instrumental in filing legislation to help public employees and retirees with pension and retirement issues. She also won passage in the House of landmark legislation to help victims and first responders to obtain the infectious disease status of perpetrators in criminal cases.

Candaras, who promised to bring government closer to the people of western Massachusetts, said she will continue her practice of bringing State officials to her district for hearings and seminars that benefit citizens in their involvement with state government. She is the co-founder of the Legislative Institute at Western New England College School of Law, which hosted three major committee hearings this past term.

Candaras looks forward to an active campaign and expects to meet with voters throughout the district in the coming five months.

The new 12th Hampden District is the largest in population of the western Massachusetts Districts. Gale Candaras represents portions of Wards 6 and 7 in Springfield, precincts 1 and 2 in East Longmeadow, and the town of Wilbraham.
