CANDARAS APPLAUDS LIONS’ GIFT TO THE FRIENDS OF WILBRAHAM SENIORS

Wilbraham – State Representative Gale D. Candaras (D-Wilbraham) applauds The Wilbraham Lions’ recent charitable gift for the Friends of Wilbraham Seniors’ campaign drive to purchase a new senior van for Wilbraham. On June 28th, Candaras gathered with members of the group and local Wilbraham residents at Orchard Valley at Wilbraham to officially kick off their campaign drive for a new senior van. The highlight of the event was marked by Mr. Bill Cote, President of the Wilbraham Lions’ Club, presenting Ms. Deanna Lawrence, President of the Friends of Wilbraham Seniors, a $1,000 donation to assist the group in its goal for a new senior van.

Candaras said, “The Wilbraham Lions Club has a long history of philanthropy here in Wilbraham. Throughout the years, the Lions have been the backbone of support for various programs and fundraiser drives for children, education, seniors and community initiatives. I applaud and commend their continued generosity and community spirit to improve the quality of life for Wilbraham residents and the surrounding area.”

“Wilbraham Lions Club has been operating since 1946 and providing assistance to various community groups. Over the last year, the Lions have donated $10,000 to charities,” states Bill Cote. He further adds, “We are very proud and happy to assist the Wilbraham Seniors.”

There is a substantial need in the senior community for accessible transportation. “So many seniors cannot drive at night and so much of community life takes place in the evening that they are, unfortunately, excluded from participating. A senior van, properly equipped is very expensive and without the assistance of local residents and community groups, such as Mr. Lawrence R. Fountain, Ms. Sharon Mappin, Mr. Bill Cote and the Lions, the success of this campaign would not be possible,” claims Candaras.

The June 28th “Kick Off” event is only the first in several planned fundraising events for the Friends of Wilbraham Seniors’ drive to acquire a senior van for Wilbraham. Seniors interested in participating or assisting in the organizing of events are welcome. The group meets at 1pm on the first Wednesday of the month at Representative Candaras’ District Office, 17 Main Street, Wilbraham.

Individuals interested in donating or would like more information about the group should contact the office of State Representative Gale D. Candaras and speak with her Chief of Staff, Candace Ouillette Gaumond. The telephone number is (413) 599-4785.
